The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is constantly engaging in new ways to protect consumers more effectively. In pursuit of that goal, the CPSC’s draft 2016-2020 Strategic Plan was recently released for public comment. Although the language of the Strategic Plan may sound broad, a great deal of thought and effort has gone into what our five-year plan should be and how, through this plan, we can do a better job of protecting consumers from unsafe products. Now, it is your turn to let us know what you think should be included in our long-term plans. Please do. We take your input very seriously.
The Strategic Plan describes the CPSC’s vision to ensure “a nation free from unreasonable risks of injury and death from consumer products.” The plan outlines four goals for improving safety for American citizens:
(1) Cultivate the most effective consumer product safety workforce;
(2) Prevent hazardous products from reaching consumers;
(3) Respond quickly to address hazardous consumer products in the marketplace and with consumers; and,
(4) Communicate useful information quickly and effectively to better inform decisions.
The Strategic Plan also highlights four cross-cutting priorities that are integral to each goal of the Strategic Plan and “the way the CPSC works.” These priorities are operational excellence, data collection and analysis, information technology, and internal and external collaboration.
The CPSC has an enormous scope of responsibility coupled with a staff of fewer than 600 people. Therefore, it is crucial that we find ways to bolster efficiency and effectiveness.
We need all our stakeholders to comment on this proposed Strategic Plan. Thoughtful feedback from consumer activists, trade associations, subject matter experts, scientists, academics, manufacturers, retailers and importers will assist us in focusing our vision and practices in the coming years in the most beneficial way possible.
Please join me in an effort to spread the word and encourage others to review and comment on CPSC’s 2016-2020 Strategic Plan. The proposal is available for review here. Instructions for submitting comments are available in the Federal Register.
This Strategic Plan correctly announces the CPSC’s mission as #KeepingConsumersSafe! And it represents an important step toward fulfilling that mission. I hope you will help CPSC create the best plan possible and continue to stand with us in our pursuit of safer products for American consumers.
